Description

A BUCKET RACE. A festival in honour of St. Bartholomew is held yearly by the peasants in the village of Margionigen, Germany. This festivity dates back over two centuries, and is, as we are told in their folk-lore, in commemoration of the virtue of one of the shepherds, who would not be bribed by a wily master. An interesting event during these festivities is the water-bucket race, the object of which is to award a prize to the damsel who first arrives at the post with the most water in her bucket. The illustration gives an idea of some of the exciting scenes which contribute to making this event one of the most popular during the gathering.
