A MONSTER BANYAN TREE. The above tree is several hundred years old, and forms a shelter to the market place at Fangana, in the French Soudan. The tree is supported in a remarkable way by numerous branches, which, having grown downward, have reached the ground and taken root. It is said that, besides its huge trunk, the tree can boast of no fewer than 256 minor trunks, such as are shown in our picture. The Soudanese assemble here, and several hundred people find shelter under the banyan at the time of the weekly market. '.•¦'¦-
