Description

A MUH-WOHWA, OR INDIAN DUEL. The above striking picture represents a custom practised to the present time by the Indians of the Utah tribe. The duel, which takes place before a large assembly, consists of a somewhat peculiar contest, inasmuch as one hand of each combatant is tied to a tree in such a manner that either of them can turn round and round the tree followed by his antagonist, and vice-versd. Lots are drawn for who may use the right hand, and the duel generally ends with the death of both antagonists.
