Description

AN AFRICAN CHIEFS DANCE. Major Serpa Pinto, in his travels through Central Africa, tells how the Sova Mar'anda, chief of one of the numerous South African tribes, indulges occasionally in a somewhat turbulent dance. He is fantastically attired, which adds to his already hippopotamus-like proportions. The king, by dancing before a guest, thereby confers the greatest honour upon the visitor, and whilst he thus jumps wildly and leaps madly, his entourage stand in rows and produce a series of monotonous sounds, whilst they clap their hands in accompaniment.'~'_~j
