Description

JAPANESE TRADING JUNKS.

Consisting, as Japan does, of four large and innumerable small islands, her principal roads are inland seas. Hence her great necessity for ships and sailors. The mercantile marine of Japan consists of eight hundred vessels and nearly seventeen thousand native craft. The merchant traders or junks, like those in the photograph, are at once lightly and strongly built, and in the lone, narrow hold there is room for stowing an incredible quantity of merchandise of every description.

An interesting reference piece, supplied without mat or mount.
