The City of Malines (Flemish, Mechelen) is situated on the Dyles 13 miles north north-east of Brussels in the province of Antwerp. In the year 915 it was in the possession of the Bishops of Liege, but passed later to Brabant and Burgundy. The Cathedral of St. Rombold, the tower of which is shown in the background, was begun in the 13th century, but rebuilt in the 14th and 15th in consequence of a fire. Formerly, the city was very famous for the Mechlin lace, and nowadays this industry is by no means unimportant.
