Among the numerous bridges connecting the different islands of which Ghent is composed, the "Pont aux Herbes," with its surroundings, is the most picturesque. It spans the "Quai an Ble" and the "Quai aux Herbes." The houses are quaint and lofty, and in their solid Flemish architecture, with tall gables covered with a wash of yellow chalk, and fronted by magnificent quays, retain many striking traces of the medievalism which once made this historic quarter so famous.
