This elegant Gothic edifice was commenced in the 13th century, but never finished. The portal of the south transept, with a superb rose-window above it forms the most beautiful entrance. From the principal or western entrance rises a great square tower, ascended by 368 steps, and built in 1254 by Utenhove. In the interior of the church the dark blue stone of the arches and columns contrasts well with the rest of the building. The stalls in the sanctuary were skilfully carved by Urban Vaillebert in 1598. The resting place of Cornelius Jansenius, Bishop of Ypres, who died in 1638 a victim to the plague, is in this beautiful church, which, with its fine paintings and other treasures of art, is now destroyed.
