THE CHAIN OF MOUSTIERS.
Not far from the village of Moustiers, in the South of France, there may be seen a curious relic of old times, in the form of a huge chain extending from the tip of one peak to that of another, and having suspended at its centre a gilt star. The distance between the two peaks is 250ft., and the legend attached to its origin is as follows: A native of Moustiers, a chevalier of Rhodes, was miraculously saved by the Virgin from the cruel captivity of the Moors, and in order to commemorate the event he decided to erect this curious monument. The chain broke on one occasion and the star was hurled into the precipice, but the inhabitants raised a subscription and replaced it.
An interesting reference piece, supplied without mat or mount.
