Description

THE ELEVATED RAILWAY ON MOUNT WASHINGTON.

Mount Washington, 6,293ft. high, and overlooking thousands of square miles, has a carriage road ascending its huge rocky slopes, and a large hotel and other buildings on its summit. This first cog-rail mountain railway in the world was constructed up this peak in 1868-69. The very powerful little locomotives push trains up a height of 3,730ft. in a course of less than three miles, the highest grade being 13 1/2 inches in a yard. This mountain belongs to what is known as the Presidential Range.

An interesting reference piece, supplied without mat or mount.
