The Grand Place, or Market Place, is one of the finest medieval squares in the world. The principal buildings consist of the Hotel du Ville or Town Hall, the Maison du Roi, and the old Guild or Trade houses, most of which date from the 17th century. The square has always played an important part in history, and it was here that Counts Egmont and Hoorn and other leading nobles were beheaded in 1568 and the following year, by order of the Duke of Alva.
