This is, perhaps, the most characteristic view of Bruges, the " Venice of the North," with its picturesque canals and quaint old houses. It is difficult to believe that these sleepy waterways were once the highway of international traffic from northern to southern Europe, and that this city of the dead was once the commercial centre of the western world. The famous Belfry, dating from 1280, is easily distinguishable on the right.
